“A Night of Chekhov” at Actors Temple Theatre
1.5 out of 5 stars
During the three one-act plays that make up "A Night of Chekhov," characters protest repeatedly that they can't stand shouting. If only the actors and director had heeded those words. Unrestrained shouting nearly obscures the seeds of genius that the company intended to draw out in these youthful Chekhov works. "The Proposal," a comedy, comes off the best, as petty arguments derail love declarations. "The Bear" has similar potential, but the actors seem confused about how to play the romantic tensions spurred by conflict over a debt. "Swan Song," strangely performed in near-darkness, can't hide its miscasting. — Adam Z. Horvath
