“The Other Place” at The Shed

3 out of 5 stars

Alexander Zeldin has written an often disturbingly powerful play in “The Other Place,” a take on “Antigone” that chronicles a family trying to come to terms with the passing of one of their own, even years after the fact. The only problem is that the production, directed by Zeldin, layers on too much cutting edge-for-cutting edge’s sake ideas and staging concepts (i.e. what’s with the bright screen hovering above the actors?). It’s as if the playwright doesn’t trust his material -- and he should. That said, the cast delivers some harrowing performances, making pivotal moments feel all too raw and real. – Charles Passy
