Ali Ewoldt’s recent 54 Below show was a celebration on many levels, honoring her Filipino heritage and recognizing the importance of family and dreams. It also proved a solid survey of her 20-year career. The first Asian-American actress to play Christine Daaé in the Broadway production of “Phantom of the Opera,” the immensely talented Ewoldt wove charming tales of theatrical life alongside such songs as “A Whole New World” (with fellow Filipino Jose Llana), “Vanilla Ice Cream” and, naturally, the “Phantom” classic “Think of Me” (with rising star Anna Zavelson). Making the evening more special: It was Ewoldt’s birthday. — Ryan Kinkade
