Wendy Wasserstein’s 1996 drama “An American Daughter” is rarely presented, which alone would seemingly make this production a must-see. Plus, it’s a prescient play – one that addressed the challenges women face in the political realm long before the presidential candidacies of Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. But it’s a play marred by too many themes and storylines – and by restoring an unpublished act, this staging likely makes things only more unwieldy. Not helping matters: Jean Lichty, in the lead role, lacks the presence needed to anchor the production. Still, the supporting cast is strong, with special kudos to Dakin Matthews. — Charles Passy
