“Anna Christie” at St. Ann’s Warehouse

3.5 out of 5 stars

Fierce performances power director Thomas Kail's revival of Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie." Michelle Williams is haunted and haunting as the titular fallen daughter; Brian D'Arcy James simultaneously fragile and monstrous as the barge-captain father who abandoned her; Tom Sturridge a dynamo as the shipwrecked sailor she falls for. Yet the show is less than the sum of those parts. Kail's stylized flourishes and the movable wood-pallet set distract from O'Neill's motifs of “devil sea” and fog. And given 20-year-old Anna's youth, Williams at 45 brings a cognitive dissonance to the play's dynamics, including her line, "You're me in 40 years." — Adam Z. Horvath
