“Beaches” at the Majestic Theater

2 out of 5 stars

The world wasn’t likely waiting for a musical version of “Beaches,” the novel that inspired the 1988 Bette Midler movie associated with the song “Wind Beneath My Wings: But for those wanting such a show, the Broadway iteration will probably meet expectations: It’s a traditional, book-driven affair and it tells its sentimental story over a fullish two-act timeframe. It also serves as a solid showcase for Jessica Vosk, who plays the brassy character tackled by Midler. But other theatergoers will find it a longish, treacly bore, especially in a season with livelier, smarter offerings (i.e. “Two Strangers,” “Jellicle Ball”). — Charles Passy
