“Bigfoot!” at New York City Center
4 out of 5 stars
What has musical theater been missing? Cryptozoology! Enter “Bigfoot!,” a goofy romp through Muddirt -- a fictional town brimming with nuclear waste, toxic chemicals and 1980s Reaganomics. But outside of town lives Bigfoot (the hilarious Grey Henson), who’s less of a monster than the mayor (the deliciously sinister Alex Moffat). The great cast, also highlighted by Crystal Lucas-Perry and Jade Jones, gets huge laughs thanks to Amber Ruffin’s fantastic book and lyrics. But “Bigfoot!” also delivers big heart and a timely metaphor for the scapegoating of the LGBTQ community. The missing link is better music; songs lack complexity or uniqueness. — Justin McCallum
