“Birthright” at MCC
4 out of 5 stars
Jonathan Spector is such an engaging storyteller and master of dialogue that he can make a three-act play, spread over three-plus hours, feel shorter than some recent single-act dramas. At least that’s the case with “Birthright,” his look at Jewish identity told through six people who attended the namesake travel program that brings American Jews to Israel. The play follows them over an 18-year period as their views on faith, politics and, yes, Israel evolve. It’s a potent, telling work – especially for those who are Jewish – though Spector can come close to letting his characters lapse into sitcom mode. — Charles Passy (Photo on home page by Emilio Madrid)
