“Blood/Love” at Theater 555

3 out of 5 stars

Self-described vampire pop opera “Blood/Love” is part flashy arena concert and part sexy punk nightclub -- with some plastic fangs as the cherry on top. It tells the story of centuries-old vampire Valerie Bloodlove, who leaves her devilish ex for the mortal world. The production’s best aspects are its astonishing technical elements and enchanting choreography. But visuals can't make up for abysmal sound mixing – you’ll need the provided libretto to follow the flimsy plot. Still, Zephaniah Divine Wages and Brooke Simpson steal the show as vampy vampires; too bad lead and co-creator Carey Renee Sharpe’s performance lacks teeth. — Justin McCallum
