“Burnout Paradise” at Astor Place Theatre
3 out of 5 stars
Four Australians on treadmills present a potent, energetic and dark metaphor for human existence in “Burnout Paradise.” Members of theater collective Pony Cam endeavor to complete tasks attributed to what they’ve label core tenets of life (Survival, Administration, Performance and Leisure) while constantly running and trying to beat personal bests in distances covered. They’re not alone in their endeavor, as they request audience assistance to cook a meal, apply for grants and complete silly tasks. Since the crowd becomes so integral, it's easy root for communal success. But the show’s novelty burns out fast. — Justin McCallum
