“Call Me Izzy” at Studio 54 theater
4 out of 5 stars
Jean Smart proves herself to be an actress’ actress in Jamie Wax’s “Call Me Izzy.” That is, Smart hits all the right obvious notes in this one-person showcase about a rural Louisiana woman – and budding poet – trying to survive an abusive, years-long marriage. But there’s also a quiet humor and depth she brings to the part that elevates the occasionally melodramatic script – Smart, in short, becomes Izzy. It’s complemented by Sarna Lapine’s direction that has Smart commanding the complete stage, making an intimate play feel shrewdly bigger. Mikiko Suzuki Macadams’ scenic design captures the trailer-park setting in an imaginative way. — Charles Passy
