“Cats: The Jellicle Ball” at Broadhurst Theatre
4.5 out of 5 stars
In its original incarnation, “Cats” was an engaging vaudevillian romp without much to say – other than to celebrate, well, cats. In “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” a brilliant reimagining of the Andrew Lloyd Webber show, there’s much to be said and much to be celebrated – ballroom culture, but by extension LGBTQ, Black and Latinx cultures. In short, it’s a metaphorical romp – the cats are truly out of the bag – but it makes its points with joyous verve (those costumes! that dancing!) and turns an audience into a community in the process. If anything, it’s sometimes too ambitious for its own good. — Charles Passy
