“Cold War Choir Practice” at MCC Theater

3 out of 5 stars

Ro Reddick’s “Cold War Choir Practice” is an ambitiously odd play, reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film in its stylized storytelling. And as with many an Anderson film, this may not be everyone’s cup of twee tea. It’s multiple stories in one – about a Black family confronting the challenges of America in the ‘80s Reagan era, about U.S.-Soviet relations in that period and about, yes, a choir that serves as something of a domestic propaganda tool. A terrific cast tries to stitch it all together, though I can’t say the play always works. But it can be, well, oddly appealing. — Charles Passy
