“creation stories and all the important importants” at Lincoln Center Theater
4 out of 5 stars
Mfoniso Udofia takes audiences on a surreal, touching journey with her new play “creation stories and all the important importants.” Helmed by Abigail Onwunali’s bracingly raw and unwaveringly powerful performance, the work uses humor and heart to explore identity and the female power to create. While some Nigerian cultural references may elude theatergoers and the unconventional style of narration is initially off-putting, “creation stories” overcomes all this and feels wholly universal. Tamilla Woodard’s magnificent direction draws you in further, as does inventive projection and scenic design by Katherine Freer and Jason Ardizzone-West, respectively. — Justin McCallum
