“Crooked Cross” at Theatre Row
4 out of 5 stars
As Hitler gained power in the early 1930s, a young British writer named Sally Carson visited Germany and penned "Crooked Cross," a cautionary drama of a family tragically fracturing as members increasingly align with the fascist regime. This rare real-time depiction, staged in 1935 in the U.K. despite censorship of anti-Nazi themes, is getting a vivid second life. The new production ably highlights the long-forgotten play's sensitive handling of split loyalties and its clear-eyed presentation of a menace growing in plain sight. Mint Theater Company specializes in such rediscoveries; it's hard to imagine one with more timely resonance. — Adam Z. Horvath
