“Data” at the Lucille Lortel Theatre

4.5 out of 5 stars

Matthew Libby’s “Data” is a remarkably solid, smart drama, especially for a playwright making his Off Broadway debut. Yes, the subject is data, or rather how data can be mined in nefarious ways – in this case to profile immigrants to the U.S. Libby frames the story as a moral conundrum faced by fresh-out-of-college tech nerds; his script bristles with a contemporary vibrancy but never loses sight of its ideas. Oh, and the four-person cast? Absolutely tremendous, especially Karan Brar as the programmer pivotal to the unfolding tale. That said, the 100-minute one-acter might benefit from being split into two acts. — Charles Passy
