“David Copperfield” at 59E59 Theaters

4 out of 5 stars

Many of the pleasures of watching just three actors enact Dickens' epic "David Copperfield" come from the inventive stagecraft that enables their feat. A bundled-up infant magically becomes a man's coat; hats become characters; costumes become scenery. But the biggest pleasure is in how the essence of the sprawling novel is faithfully, vividly conveyed -- matching the same company's three-person "Pride and Prejudice" last season, likewise adapted and directed by Abigail Pickard Price. Even when the versatile performers (Luke Barton, Louise Beresford, Eddy Payne) jump briefly into parody, they jump right back into the true spirit of Dickens. — Adam Z. Horvath
