“Eurydice” at Signature Theatre
4 out of 5 stars
Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice” reorients the Greek myth of Orpheus toward his bride’s journey through the Underworld, and makes her deceased-yet-devoted father her guide and the pivotal figure in a tale of filial bonds beyond death. Brian d’Arcy James is perfect in the paternal role inspired by the passing of the playwright’s own father, while Maya Hawke, famous for “Stranger Things,” winningly projects wide-eyed wonder as Eurydice. But her scenes with Caleb Eberhardt’s understated Orpheus lack chemistry -- undercutting the play’s balance. Director Les Waters and scenic designer Scott Bradley, who together staged the play’s 2003 debut, repeat their impressive work. — Adam Z. Horvath
