“The Fear of 13” at the James Earl JonesTheatre

4 out of 5 stars

One of the best things about Adrien Brody’s work in “The Fear of 13” is how the actor is confident enough to leave considerable room for Tessa Thompson, his co-star, to shine. And shine she does. Ultimately, both leads offer meaningful, nuanced and touching performances – Brody as a man wrongfully convicted for murder and set to be executed, Thompson as the woman who hears his story, then falls in love with him. Together, they elevate Lindsey Ferrentino’s play, which meanders more than it should and doesn’t quite deliver a clear thematic message. Still, the conclusion will evoke some well-earned tears. — Charles Passy
