“Giant” at the Music Box Theater

3.5 out of 5 stars

As expected, John Lithgow delivers a fine portrayal of Roald Dahl in Mark Rosenblatt’s “Giant,” a play that looks at the children’s book author in all his preening brilliance and tackles his anti-Israel and antisemitic views. But the production’s true highlight is Aya Cash’s deft performance as a publishing-house representative who challenges Dahl: Cash conveys a righteous anger -- her character is Jewish -- that feels raw and real. It’s too bad the production’s sound design proves problematic, though the issue may also be the actors’ diction. Plus, the second act drags a bit, especially by the end. — Charles Passy
