||: Girls :||: Chance :||: Music :||” at Vineyard Theatre

2 out of 5 stars

You can appreciate the novel approach Eisa Davis takes in “||: Girls :||: Chance :||: Music :||,” a work revolving around four teenage girls at a summer music program. This is part play, part concert and part improvisatory experiment (there’s a musical “chance” element). But that doesn’t necessarily make for compelling theater. The show drags (it runs nearly two intermission-less hours). Nor does its meandering storyline hold much interest – yes, teen girls have their problems (think relationship dramas, eating disorders, etc.), but that hardly seems revelatory – at least as presented here. Still, the cast deserves props for its musical chops. 2 out of 5 stars. At the Vineyard Theatre, through June 21; vineyardtheatre.org. — Charles Passy
