“Gotta Dance” at Stage 42

3.5 out of 5 stars

"Gotta Dance!" can seem random: It's an homage to Broadway choreography without any particular theme. An able troupe mounts 17 unrelated song-and-dance numbers, from classic to obscure. Those that originally starred legends -- Gene Kelly, Liza Minnelli -- lack a certain panache by comparison. But midway through -- around "Cool" from "West Side Story" -- electric performances begin overcoming such caveats. It helps that Deanna Doyle shines even when filling in for an absent lead dancer, while Jessica Lee Goldyn, a veteran of playing Cassie in "A Chorus Line," brings the house down with "The Music and the Mirror." — Adam Z.
