“Heartbreak Hotel” at DR2 Theatre
3 out of 5 stars
True to its title, there’s plenty of heartbreak in Karin McCracken’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” The play chronicles the angst and agita that follow a breakup, with McCracken playing the woman (ostensibly herself) who’s suffering through it all over a six-year period. Some humorous, if not poignant, musings and clever staging ideas keep things from getting too morose; it also helps that what could be a one-character play is actually well-designed as a two-character one with Simon Leary smartly playing the various men in McCracken’s life. But as these things often go, “Heartbreak” can feel overly navel gaze-ish in that fringe-theater vein. — Charles Passy
