“I’m Almost There” at BAM

4.5 out of 5 stars

I mean this as a big compliment: Todd Almond's dizzily wonderful "I'm Almost There" plays as if someone smashed apart a William Finn musical based on James Joyce's "Ulysses," then performed the shards -- and they somehow cohered. Almost none of Almond's gorgeous songs, provocative notions or surreal narratives go uninterrupted -- and that's exactly the point, as nutty distractions keep complicating his character's odyssey to reconnect with a guy named Guy he met at brunch. Aided by star director David Cromer and onstage musician/actors Erin Hill and Noah Max Amick, Almond creates something that can't be categorized -- nor forgotten. — Adam Z. Horvath
