“The Dinosaurs” at Playwrights Horizons

2 out of 5 stars

Does a 12-step meeting make for good theater? Jacob Perkins tests that premise in “The Dinosaurs,” but the results don’t prove all that convincing. The problem? While Perkins builds his play around some interesting characters – six women, to be exact – he doesn’t provide almost anything in the way of plot. Indeed, the mechanics of the meeting — even the setting up of the chairs – often take precedence over what we learn about the meeting attendees. And the jumping back and forth in time only muddies things. At least the cast is solid, with Kathleen Chalfant an especial standout. – Charles Passy
