“Just in Time” at Circle in the Square

3 out of 5 stars

Oh, the shark bites -- at least in the first half of “Just in Time,” the bio-musical about Bobby Darin. Of course, I’m paraphrasing a lyric from “Mack the Knife,” Darin’s signature song -- and Jonathan Groff, playing the crooner, delivers the number in sensational, swinging fashion as the fit conclusion to an engaging act one. Unfortunately, the second half loses steam -- think pat storytelling -- and any semblance of a theme goes by the wayside. Groff also loses some of that swinging charm, so his post-Tony star turn ultimately becomes a slight letdown. Fortunately, the onstage band remains tight throughout. — Charles Passy
