“Kenrex” at the Lucille Lortel Theatre

4 out of 5 stars

"Kenrex" is both a one-man show and flashy theatrical spectacle -- and it’s thoroughly enjoyable on both fronts. Co-creator Jack Holden plays 35 characters in the true-crime drama of a Missouri small-town bully terrorizing his neighbors until they turn the tables – and he distinguishes the main ones with astonishing effectiveness. He's punctuated by John Patrick Elliott's boisterous one-man band, some recorded voices and a whirlwind of stage effects overseen by director/co-creator Ed Stambollouian. The show's limitation is its procedural genre: It never plumbs the depths of its characters, not even its villain, who remains a chilling cipher. — Adam Z. Horvath
