“King of the Yees” at Signature Theatre

3.5 out of 5 stars

In “King of the Yees,” playwright Lauren Yee encapsulates the Chinese-American experience through the true story of her father’s involvement with an “obsolescent” San Francisco family association. Yee’s method of doing so can be oddly meta-ish – this often seems like a play within a play within a play. She also throws nearly everything into the mix (think a Chinese lion dance done to a Michael Jackson song). While the piling on can feel just like that, the work eventually proves both entertaining and moving. The production delivers thanks to a strong cast headed by Francis Jue and Kelly Marie Tran.
