“Lowcountry” at Atlantic Theater

3 out of 5 stars

The title of Abby Rosebrock’s “Lowcountry” can be read as a reference to the play’s South Carolina setting but also a nod to the seemingly low morals of the man and woman at the center of this sexually charged date-night story. The conceit is that David, the character whose character most comes into initial question, may not be so “low” after all while the reverse holds true of Tally, his date. The premise generally works – the production’s fine casting helps -- though the unwinding feels slightly sluggish. And the ending may be intentionally abrupt, but it still seems, well, abrupt. — Charles Passy
