“Making a Show of Myself” at Irish Rep

4 out of 5 stars

Mary Kate O Flanagan loves to tell a good story – in fact, make that six stories. Her one-woman show, aptly titled “Making a Show of Myself,” encompasses that many tales, drawn from her life and Irish heritage. It’s a performance piece very much in the Moth tradition – think storytelling as a theatrical art form, sometimes highly engaging but also sometimes a tad precious. For the most part, her act is on the engaging side – and a couple of the stories deeply register. In particular, one about her grandmother befriending a captured German solider during World War II speaks volumes. — Charles Passy
