“Masquerade” at former Lee’s Art Shop building

5 out of 5 stars

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” may have enjoyed a historic Broadway run, but is it possible the show’s ideal iteration is as an immersive spectacle, staged in an abandoned building? That’s the thought that occurs as you make your way through “Masquerade,” a realization of “Phantom” that’s part fever dream, part haunted house and thoroughly thrilling and emotionally crushing all at once. The production, taking place across several rooms (and a rooftop), is a masterpiece of stagecraft. But it’s complemented by performances celebrating the musical’s still-remarkable power. See it for yourself and revel in the mystery and majesty. — Charles Passy
