“Mexodus” at Audible’s Minetta Lane Theatre
4.5 out of 5 stars
“Mexodus” is a true theatrical heir to 10-year-old “Hamilton” — finally! — and like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It's a story rooted in a little-known chapter of 19th-century American history, when slaves fled the deep South for Mexico. But it's all conveyed as a hip hop-inflected history lesson. Creators and stars Nygel D. Robinson and Brian Quijada sing soulfully, rap impressively and shift smoothly between comedy and tragedy, bringing a somewhat generic narrative to vivid life. Most importantly, they accompany themselves on a dazzling series of rustic instruments, looped electronically via onstage foot-pedals and soundboard into glorious layers of sound. — Adam Z. Horvath
