“Monte Cristo” at Theatre at St. Jean’s

2 out of 5 stars

Although Alexandre Dumas may not be rolling over in his grave, he couldn’t be thrilled with Peter Kellogg and Stephen Weiner’s adaptation of his literary epic of revenge into a musical romantic comedy. “Monte Cristo” isn’t bad for what it is, but the uneven, goofy tone is jarring given the source material. As the leads, Adam Jacobs and Sierra Boggess try to elevate the production, but their talent can’t compensate for the show’s issues, including its schlocky side characters. Also, the bouncing between traditional Broadway songwriting and modern musical theater numbers doesn’t help. — Justin McCallum
