"Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of God” at Playwrights Horizons
4 out of 5 stars
In the powerful "Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of God,” every character gets their say -- even though they’re all played by the same actress. Star Jen Tullock (Devon in Apple TV+’s “Severance”) and her co-author Frank Winters seek to demystify stereotypes about the queer experience of coming out and leaving an evangelical family, aiming to portray the pain and complexity for all involved. Tullock achieves that, convincingly inhabiting each player and perspective. There's some confusion from distracting video projections and a voice-over that's disconnected from characters' monologues. But when the play's final storm arrives, it packs a wallop. — Adam Z. Horvath
