“Open” at the WP Theatre

3 out of 5 stars

Crystal Skillman’s “Open” tells a story that’s hardly new in today’s world – namely, the challenges of being part of an openly queer couple. But this one-woman show (the beguiling Megan Hill) uses magic tricks, performed in pantomime, to advance its narrative and make its points. It’s reminiscent of other magic-themed works – Derek DelGaudio’s brilliant “In & Of Itself” comes to mind – but through, well, a queer lens. At times, the play, which premiered in 2019, is effective, particularly when it takes a tragic turn. But it’s often too enamored with its conceit and devices and loses focus as a result. — Charles Passy
