“Parrots at the Pagoda” at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater
2 out of 5 stars
Early on, “Parrots at the Pagoda” announces itself to be a “fantasía,” examining and interpreting the life of Johnny Rodríguez, a Puerto Rican singer, musician and drag pioneer. Unfortunately, the new show, written and directed by Jorge B. Merced, is lacking the imagination or verve its colorful character deserves. The story is bereft of detail and conflict, leaving the talented ensemble to perform many classic songs beautifully but without any greater meaning behind them. Those familiar with Rodríguez, or his more famous brother, Tito, may still be pleased, but the works does little to bring others into the fold. — Justin McCallum
