“Pepper Slit” at the East Village Basement
1.5 out of 5 stars
There’s always comedic gold to mine satirizing aging theatrical divas: Think Ana Gasteyer’s viral September L. Davis character who’s, well, hilariously divalicious. Like Gasteyer, Chloe Troast is a former “SNL” cast member — and she too has a show queen to showcase: Meet Pepper Slit, a gawky doyenne who favors clownish makeup and delights in oddball reminiscing. But Troast’s intimate, interactive show is marred by both a pointless freneticism and bloated quality (five additional cast members!). A joke lands here or there and the story sorta finds its arc at the end. But you’ll probably have lost interest by then. — Charles Passy
