“Picnic at Hanging Rock” at Greenwich House Theater
4 out of 5 stars
The new musical “Picnic at Hanging Rock,” by Hilary Bell (book, lyrics) and Greta Gertler Gold (music), is operatic, understated and spooky all at once. Based on Joan Lindsay’s novel and set in pastoral, turn-of-the-20th Century Australia, the show follows the field trip of a girls’ college during which some members disappear mysteriously. There’s much to admire in the production as well, from the lush, inventive set design to the ethereal choreography. And that’s not to mention the great ensemble of young actresses, who provide haunting harmonies. The musical would benefit from some cutting, but it’s still exciting new work. — Justin McCallum
