The best thing about this production of Marin Ireland’s “Pre-Existing Condition” is that it affords us the opportunity to see Lupita Nyong’o in the main role. And the Oscar winner delivers a masterful performance as a woman coming to terms with being a victim of domestic violence – she keeps herself tightly coiled so that her torment is both hidden and yet clearly there. And that elevates a play that doesn’t have a lot plot-wise to hold one’s attention. Other actresses will tackle the role in the coming weeks – it will be interesting to see what they bring to the table.
