“Reunions” at New York City Center

4 out of 5 stars

The fun musical "Reunions" makes an ambitious connection: It adapts two century-old one-act plays, by different writers, in which former lovers meet by chance. In the sharply witty "The Twelve-Pound Look," a feminist social satire, the spot-on Chilina Kennedy plays an independent ex-wife who disrupts the smug comfort of her ex-husband's new household. In the lighter confection "A Sunny Morning," Chip Zien and Joanna Glushak -- both perfect -- share a park bench and secretly recognize each other from decades ago. The tuneful musical additions are mostly slight yet effective, and the elegant staging helps to unify the two acts. — Adam Z. Horvath
