“Rob Lake Magic” at the Broadhurst Theatre

1.5 out of 5 stars

Oh Rob Lake, we hardly knew ye. Even before Lake, a genial, kid-friendly magician but hardly a Broadway-caliber showman, officially opened his run at the Broadhurst Theatre, the production’s closing was announced. Lake is capable of weaving together a series of tricks, notwithstanding reports that some could see the secret behind the sauce (I, for one, couldn’t tell). But his show lacked a cohesive theme that would make it feel larger. Plus, the big advertised highlight – guest appearances by those ever-entertaining Muppets – felt grafted on. In all, no harm, but no magic (at least in the metaphorical sense), either. — Charles Passy
