“Romy & Michelle” at Stage 42
2.5 out of 5 stars
"Romy & Michele" attempts to slavishly copy the cult-classic movie it's based on. The script -- in which two goofy layabouts fib at their high-school reunion about inventing Post-Its -- is recycled almost verbatim. The dorky fashions are faithfully refabricated. And the talented leads, Laura Bell Bundy and Kara Lindsay, reproduce the distinctive voices of the movie's stars, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow. But the stage version adds nothing original except its forgettable score -- a steep downgrade from the film's iconic pop-hit soundtrack. Meanwhile, it dulls the movie's tone of self-parody. So why not just watch the film instead? — Adam Z. Horvath
