“Death of a Salesman” at Winter Garden Theatre
2.5 out of 5 stars
Even if Arthur Miller’s less-is-more staging ideas for “Death of a Salesman” informed this Joe Mantello-directed Broadway revival, it still feels too minimalist. And it doesn’t help that it’s being presented in the cavernous Winter Garden, a theater best suited for musicals. Plus, having a big ol’ car – a symbol of Willy Loman’s nomadic occupation – occupy a chunk of onstage real estate seems unnecessary. The real point: This is as much a play about people as ideas – and when things get overly conceptual you care less about the people, despite the generally solid, starry cast (Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf) here. — Charles Passy
