“Saturday Church” at New York Theatre Workshop
4.5 out of 5 stars
Talk about an embarrassment of riches. “Saturday Church” combines the talents of many, including pop iconoclast Sia and acclaimed playwright James Ijames, plus it has an incredible cast featuring Tony winners J. Harrison Ghee and Joaquina Kalukango and newcomer Bryson Battle. All that star power doesn’t go to waste: Instead, it delivers a telling musical about a Black young man’s journey to embrace his queer identity. The songs reflect various influences but move the narrative along with tremendous emotional depth. In short, this “church” becomes a place truly divine and the show feels almost like a contemporary successor to “Rent.” — Charles Passy
