“Tartuffe” at the New York Theater Workshop

4 out of 5 stars

It’s a tale of two Tartuffes: Following André de Shields' romp through a reinvention of Molière's farce seen earlier this season, Matthew Broderick headlines an even newer version. In this clever rewrite by Lucas Hnath, the conniving characters keep saying the quiet parts out loud, but still in hilarious rhyming couplets. This production trades the historic library setting featured in the season’s earlier “Tartuffe" for a bright, cartoonish stage, but it works just as well. As the title character, Broderick is a pleasure to watch with his trademark timid sing-song approach, while David Cross ("Arrested Development") shines as the duped patriarch. — Adam Z. Horvath
