“The Imaginary Invalid” presented by
3.5 out of 5 stars
“Everyone in the front row gets an enema.” That line midway through Red Bull Theater’s new adaptation of Moliere’s farce “The Imaginary Invalid” sums up the rollicking, fourth-wall-breaking vibe. The production layers “Rocky Horror Show”-level camp on this French-baroque satire of upper-crust medicine (a wealthy hypochondriac surrounds himself with opportunistic doctors and insists his daughter marry one). It all provides for some great fun and uproarious set pieces, but also diminishing returns. A strong cast of comic actors, led by the unflappably deadpan Mark Linn-Baker and delightfully sly Sarah Stiles, performs with aplomb, including interpolating tunes from “Les Misérables.” — Adam Z.
