Given the “Heated Rivalry” craze and the recent World Cup fervor, the homoerotic soccer drama “The Pass” should be a huge hit. But John Donnelly’s excruciatingly monotonous play just doesn’t work. The story tracks the rise of a footballer (Matisse Ratron-Neal) from rookie to star, while also exploring his sexual proclivities and fame’s foibles. Seth Byrum’s exceptional set design — posh hotel rooms, open on two sides to the audience — emphasizes the voyeuristic nature of celebrity. But that and energetically staged moments by director Max Hunter can’t provide enough interest as your mind inevitably wanders during the two-hour slog. — Justin McCallum
