“The Producers” at Ogunquit Playhouse
3.5 out of 5 stars
Ogunquit Playhouse’s staging of “The Producers” is a delightful romp that honors the original Mel Brooks show, even if the musical is showing its age. The numbers are catchy and glitzy, but jokes lampooning queerness and Nazis land differently than they did 25 years ago. Leading a talented ensemble, the usually fantastic Jason Kravitz doesn’t have enough charisma to pull off the bombastic Max Bialystok, but Dan De Luca shines as nebbishy Leo Bloom. With “Producers,” Ogunquit continues its tradition of Broadway-caliber shows worth a trip up the coast of Maine, even if this isn’t its most exciting production. — Justin McCallum
