“The Weir” at Irish Rep

5 out of 5 stars

A stellar cast brings this Irish Rep revival of Conor McPherson’s “The Weir” to life, but the production has another “star.” Namely, that bone-chilling sound of the wind, which adds the right atmospheric element to this set-in-a-village-pub tale of barflies telling tales, ghostly and otherwise. Sound designer Drew Levy deserves proper credit, but director Ciarán O’Reilly does the true wonders in staging this story with grace, warmth and a touch of melancholy. Back to the acting: It’s so natural you’ll think you’ve stepped into a real Irish pub, not an Off Broadway house. In short, a remarkable theatrical event. — Charles Passy
