“Titanique” at St. James Theatre
3.5 out of 5 stars
Titanique” is a delicious, delirious sendup of all things Celine Dion, “Titanic” and pop and Broadway cultures. But does it make for a great Broadway show? It certainly has its moments, but the Off-Broadway incarnation was a little more fun – perhaps because Marla Mindelle’s creation was so new and unexpected, but also because it benefitted from the intimacy a smaller theater affords – the jokes just landed better. Still, you’ll find plenty to appreciate in the Broadway staging – Layton Williams is a standout among the new cast members, but Mindelle continues to wow as Celine Dion in all her Celine Dion-ess. — Charles Passy
